Description

The Textile Beyond Craft symposium aims to foster a dialogue within emerging practices in textile design as part of the Textile Design Now | Design textile actuel exhibition. Highlights include the keynote speakers >Carla Hemlock, the Mohawk textile artist, Reiko Sudō, designer and director emeritus of NUNO Textiles Japan, as well as theo tyson, the Penny Vinik Curator of Fashion Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston.

This symposium is aimed at researchers, students, artists, textile enthusiasts, as well as the general public eager to explore this constantly evolving discipline.

Objectives

  • Engage the community in interdisciplinary conversations focused on the proposed themes.
  • Foster productive exchanges between textile design theorists, practitioners and educators.
  • Map emerging international reflections, initiatives, and practices in textile design to advance and disseminate knowledge.
  • Co-build international expertise and network to exchange and spark collaborations around textiles.
  • Explore relevant pedagogical approaches for further inclusion in contemporary textile design teaching.
  • Initiate dialogues on textile materiality that female textile designers lead across diverse fields of expertise.
